Elderberry Syrup
It seems to be all the rage right now so I decided to give it a try. Anything containing this many antioxidants can not do any harm. It is easy to make and it does not have a bad taste either. Adults are recommended to take 1 Tablespoon daily for up to 1 tablespoon every few hours if sick.Children are recommended to take 1 teaspoon daily, if sick 1 teaspoon every few hours. You can use this syrup to make elderberry gummies, I also have a recipe on my site.
Ingredients
- 2 cups elderberries dried
- 3 cups apple cider
- 3 cups water
- 2 apples cored and sliced
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tbsp whole cloves
- 1/4 cup honey
Instructions
- Mix in a saucepan dried elderberries, apples, spices, water and apple cider.
- Bring all ingredients to a boil and simmer on low for 30 minutes. Be sure to stir this every 5 minutes.
- Allow to cool for about 15 minutes. Strain through a mesh strainer or cheese cloth into a large bowl. Using a potato masher smash the berry mixer to get all the juices out. I put on gloves and squeezed the juice out. Use gloves or you will have purple finger nail beds like I did the first time.
- Add in your honey and stir in well.
- Place syrup into small jars and refrigerate.
- This syrup will be good for up to two weeks in the refrigerator.
